I missed last week due to family vacation! I'm back with a Camera Critter from NYC.
I present to you Balto, the heroic sled dog! This statue can be found in Central Park and was erected in 1925. Balto himself was there for the unveiling. Interestingly enough, you can now see Balto at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. After his death, he was taxidermied.

Dedicated to the indomitable spirit of the sled dogs that relayed antitoxin six hundred miles over rough ice, across treacherous waters, through Arctic blizzards from Nenana to the relief of stricken Nome in the Winter of 1925.
Endurance · Fidelity · Intelligence
Balto is a fine looking hero.
ReplyDeleteI loved the movie Balto. I had forgotten about the statue - but that's in the movie, too.
ReplyDeleteVery nice pics of the statue. I guess I never realized he was a real dog. I live a bit of a sheltered life.
ReplyDeleteGreat choice. Always good to find out something new, so that's for the doggy eductaion.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful statue! Love the shots - thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteMy critter can be found here today. =)
I love stories about dogs who were recognized as heroes. Think how many people would have died without this brave soul.
ReplyDeleteLove it! Great post. But, of course I love it - it's a tribute to a dog ;-)
ReplyDeleteHow very cool! I think I would like to see the stuffed Balto, too.
ReplyDeleteIt's kind of creepy that they stuffed him...,but I guess now everyone can bask in the glory of a hero!
