Rules Are Made To Be Broken...Right?

Ever since Bear was in kindergarten, we've had the No Video Games on School Days rule. What on earth was I thinking? It's more a punishment on me than good parenting. Bear is not the type of child to entertain himself. He must be entertained by someone or be entertaining someone. He talks LOUDLY, he talks constantly. When he's not talking, he's dancing, singing, or just plain making noise. He's a nuisance. N.U.I.S.A.N.C.E.

After a particularly trying night, I asked him "Why? Why must you be like this?" He tells me, "It's my personality. You're my mom, you have to deal with it." Do I? Do I really? (And, btw, it was not said ugly. It was said sweetly and matter of factly.)

Yesterday, he asked me if he could play the Wii. He had all his homework finished and wanted to "relax" before baseball practice. After being reminded of the rule, he informs me that that was "so kindergarten. I'm a changed boy but how can I prove it if you don't let me play?" How indeed.

I was exhausted. I mentally did not feel well. I caved. I let him play until supper was ready. A whole whopping 15 minutes. It felt good.

I think you made the right choice. Sam is the same kind of kid and I have learned to "pick my battles". There are days where I know he's been so good that he, along with me, needs the break. It's not like you have to do it all the time. :)

It's good to give like that sometimes - those "splurges" can be pretty special... What I think is great was his argument - pretty clever!

I'm glad you stopped by an commented!
